Emergency Management Advisor
Emergency Management Otago
Craig has a background in telecommunications, as an operator rather than a technician.
In his early years, in an effort to avoid a normal life, Craig joined the Army’s Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals straight from high school. During his eight years in the military, he represented New Zealand as a member of the Force Communications Unit, part of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia. Upon returning to New Zealand, he took a role as the Team Signaller in the Counter Terrorist Team of the New Zealand Special Air Service.
After his military career Craig served 21 years in the New Zealand police, during which he became a Search and Rescue coordinator for the Otago Lakes Area of the Southern Policing District. Now into his third career, as an Emergency Management Advisor with Emergency Management Otago, Craig is kept awake at night pondering the communications resilience question. In a world that increasingly relies on user friendly digital platforms, how do we refocus on critical information sharing on disrupted or destroyed networks? One thing he knows for sure, when the alpine fault ruptures, he better have the answers.
