Mike Smith started his telecommunications career in his early 20s with Ben Rumble Communications. With roles with in the Telecom dealer channel following, in business account management particularly in rural Mid Canterbury, Mike went on to Ultimate Mobile to provide connectivity options in the region – to “connect the unconnected”. With a keen interest in rural connectivity, Mike then created Ultimate Broadband with a focus on 3G and now 4G connectivity with the Rural Broadband Initiative and then building a successful rural WISP network which flies now under the UBB brand, an RBI 2 rural broadband partner with over 200 sites, and coverage from Oxford in the north to Duntroon in the south. Mike joined with several other WISPs to form WISPA NZ, the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association of NZ, to advocate for NZ’s WISP community. Mike serves now as Chairman alongside his role as CEO of UBB.
