Lex Grubner is the Managing Director of RF Test Solutions in New Zealand and has almost 40 years’ experience in the industry. His company distributes test and measurement instrumentation from some of the world’s leading manufacturers and has an accredited ISO 17025 calibration and repair laboratory in Lower Hutt. After starting work in the test equipment repair and calibration laboratory for what is now Airways Corporation and completing an NZCE in Telecommunications, Lex has held instrumentation sales and technical support/applications engineering roles for Phillips, Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies before starting his own company in 2001.

Looking under the bonnet of 5G and its over-the-air RF performance
5G promises to deliver 100 times faster data rate than today’s LTE network with a 1 ms latency. What is even more profound is that the network has to be accessible anywhere, anytime and be completely transparent to end users. To achieve these goals, many new technologies and higher frequency bands have to be deployed.
In this paper, you will learn more about what’s new to 5G; mmWave frequency band, Massive MIMO, beam forming and dynamic TDD. In addition, we will cover parameters for 5G network over-the-air performance test and evaluation including path loss, antenna pattern measurement, phased array antenna and verification. Lastly, we will look at the test equipment needed in 5G pre-deployment.
