The AREC presentation will outline AREC response to cyclone Gabrielle a major catastrophic weather event that devastated New Zealand’s far north down through Auckland, Coromandel through Hawkes Bay and Tairawhiti Gisborne. AREC volunteers along with other licensed amateur radio volunteers provided emergency communications planning and operations during this event. They worked alongside other professionals and civil defence and provided communications between CD bases, community hubs and welfare centres even when all other communications went out.
